Savory Shumai Dumplings: A Chinese Dim Sum Favorite

November 1, 2018

shumai dim sum

Shumai dumplings, also known as Shao Mai dumplings, are a popular and traditional dish in the Guangdong region of China. The dumpling typically contains shrimp or pork inside and can be eaten with or without rice. Shumai is one of many types of dim sum, which is a type of Cantonese food that contains a variety of fillings. Chefs prepare dim sum by steaming or frying it. The translated words mean dessert in English, which explains why most people eat shumai and other types of dim sum as a dessert.

The History of Dim Sum

Chefs in the Cantonese culture were the first to create and serve dim sum. People often visited Cantonese tea shacks to indulge in it. It continues to be something that people enjoy with tea instead of coffee as that is how it originated. Restaurants that serve dim sum typically open around 10:00 a.m. in the United States so people can include them with their lunch or brunch. Those looking to enjoy dim sum in China can find them available as early as 5:00 a.m.

The Making of Shumai Dumplings

The first step in preparing a shumai dumpling is to create a wrapper with water and flour. The chef will then pinch the top of the dumpling to create a pleat. However, he or she leaves the center of the pleat open to have a place to insert the toppings. After doing so, the chef cooks the dumplings by steaming them. The dumplings need to be placed approximately one and one-half inches apart to avoid having them stick together. Another way to prevent sticking is to place large lettuce leaves around the sides of the steamer.

Shumai dumplings have a see-through white color once they have been fully steamed. It’s possible to make a batch of these dumplings up to three hours in advance. They will need to be placed on a plate with corn starch, covered, and refrigerated immediately.

Traditional Serving Methods

In the typical Chinese restaurant, a server pushes a cart containing shumai dumplings around and diners call out to indicate that they would like to have one or more. The ready-to-eat dumplings sit inside of a bamboo steamer or they may be on traditional serving plates. It is less common for servers to push carts in the United States where diners typically pre-order what they would like to have.

Popular Fillings

Pork is the most common meat filling of a shumai dumpling, but chefs may also use crab or mutton. The exact ingredients and seasonings used often depends on the season of the year. Beef is a typical meat filling in Japan while Cantonese chefs usually opt for pork and crab coral. Other common fillings include bamboo shoots, chives, mushroom, and shrimp in the spring and onions during the winter months. Additionally, some chefs choose to garnish the dumplings with flavored oil, sesame seeds, chives, or green onions after removing them from the steamer.

Sauces served with the shumai dumplings complete the intense flavor experience for diners. Chile sauce, hot mustard, and soy are particular favorites.

Hoping for an Epic RV Road Trip?: 10 Things to Know for a Great Time

October 29, 2018

Are you about to embark on your first RV road trip? Before you put the pedal to the metal, read these 10 things you should know beforehand.

For many people of all ages, an RV road trip is a dream come true.

In the digital age, it sometimes seems like people crave analog experiences more than ever, leading to a resurgence of RV popularity. In fact, RVs are more popular now than they have ever been before. More than 400,000 RVs were sold in 2016 alone!

Are you planning your first RV trip? Even if you’ve taken lots of road trips by car before, an RV trip is a little different. Some extra planning can help make sure you have the time of your life.

Ready for the essential tips to help you plan for an RV road trip? Whether it’s your first trip or your 50th, we’ve got the top tips to make it great!

1. Plan for Limited WiFi

Taking a road trip in the modern day often means relying on access to WiFi for many essential things. You might want an internet connection for directions, or looking up Yelp reviews to pick the best tourist sites to stop at. You might even be hoping to bring your laptop and do a bit of work on the road.

However, WiFi connections on an RV trip tend to be spotty. Even if you stop at a campground, they might not have WiFi — or at least not a fast connection. And when you’re on the road, you might drive through large “dead spots” with no internet connection or service at all.

Setting up a hotspot on your phone is a good way to tap into WiFi when you need it. However, there’s no getting around those parts of the road with no cell service. Make sure to plan ahead for times when you can’t just Google “nearest gas station.” It’s a good idea to bring physical maps or download some to your phone.

2. Budget for Gas

RVs use much more gas than a car. Make sure that you include the expensive cost of fueling up in your trip budget. Otherwise, you’ll run out of trip funds much faster than you were expecting.

3. Know Your Height

RVs are much taller than cars and trucks. Memorize the height of your RV so you won’t try to drive it under a bridge or a sign that’s too low. If you don’t keep the height in mind, you could end up paying the high cost of damages. Visit this site for some examples of the different RV heights.

4. Practice Driving

Driving an RV can seem intimidating at first, but anyone can do it! To help you feel more comfortable on the open road, take a few short practice trips before you set out. Remember to be confident in your ability to tackle this task. After a while, it will feel just like driving a car.

5. Pack a Roadside Emergency Kit

Safety should always be a high priority before embarking on a road trip. With a roadside emergency kit, small mishaps won’t turn into big disasters, because you’ll have everything you need.

A good roadside emergency kit includes a first aid kit to take care of you and your passengers, just in case. It should also include basic vehicle repair items. Consider including jumper cables, flares or reflectors, oil, and coolant, for example.

You should also bring a flashlight, blanket, pen, paper, snacks, rags, and other basic items that will come in handy in many different situations. The great thing about an RV is that you can store these items easily since there’s so much space.

6. Use a Setup Checklist

When you’re setting up at a new campground, it’s all too easy to forget essential setup steps until you’re out of daylight or ready for bed. To make sure you don’t forget anything, keep a checklist handy. Setup will soon seem much easier!

7. Pack Food

Buying food on the road gets expensive. But with an RV, you can easily store plenty of your favorite snacks and meals to make. This can save you money, help you stay healthy, and most importantly, prevent you from running out of snacks on a stretch of empty highway.

There’s nothing wrong with packing some of your favorite junk food for a road trip. But it’s also a good idea to include some healthy choices, like your favorite fruits, in the mix. Healthy food helps give your brain and body the energy to get through a long day of driving, navigating, and setting up. Don’t forget to drink lots of water, too!

8. Stay Flexible

Planning ahead is great. It’s important to have a budget, and it’s also good to have an itinerary for how many hours you’ll drive each day, where you’ll stop, and when you should arrive at each destination.

However, many things can change on the road, and you’ll enjoy your trip more if you stay flexible. For example, the national park you planned to stay in might be closed due to forest fires on a summer trip. Be open to new, unplanned adventures that pop up along the way!

9. Exercise When You Can

There’s no way around it — a road trip involves lots of sitting. Make time to exercise during breaks: you’ll feel better and have more energy for your trip. This also helps prevent getting stiff and sore or having those dreaded muscle cramps.

10. Keep the Owner’s Manual Handy

If something needs to be fixed on your RV, the manual will help you know what to do. It can also help you figure out things that seem counterintuitive. If you just can’t seem to figure out how to turn the stove on, for example, the manual will be a big help.

Ready for Your RV Road Trip?

With the right preparation, an RV road trip will be fun, easy, and one of the most memorable times of your life. It doesn’t take much to complete the steps on this list, but they’ll save you lots of time and hassle on the road.

Wondering how to plan your trip on a limited budget? Don’t miss our budget travel tips.

8 Camping Meals That You Won’t Believe Were Cooked Over a Fire

October 22, 2018

Whether you’re an avid camper or a camp counselor, creativity is key for cooking. These camping meals are sure to please every camper’s pallet.

Camping is an awesome way to get off the couch, spend some time in nature, and figure out who was actually paying attention in Boy or Girl Scouts growing up.

Of course, it’s no secret that pulling off the perfect camping trip requires tons of planning — and a willingness to embrace the unexpected. But with so many different things to remember, camping food often gets left as an afterthought.

This year, don’t settle for canned food, nuts, and jerky. And don’t feel like you need to bring along every piece of equipment in your kitchen to create a gourmet camping experience.

Believe it or not, it’s completely possible to create camping meals that will keep everyone happy using nothing more than an open flame and the right ingredients.

Ready to see how it’s done?

If so, then read on.

The Ultimate Breakfast Sandwich

This camping food might be meant for breakfast, but we say that it’s a crowdpleaser at any time of the day.

All you need is an open fire, some tin foil, and a skillet — along with the following ingredients.

Pack a few pieces of cooked turkey bacon, ham, or even leftover barbecue in a container in your backpack. (To prevent spillage, we suggest wrapping everything up in a plastic baggie for good measure.)

Also grab a pack of English muffins and some eggs. If desired, you can also toss in a few packs of American cheese slices.

Start by heating up the English muffins in the skillet over the fire. This should take about 2-3 minutes each side. Then, take out the meat of your choice, and warm it up. Finish my frying the eggs and, if you’d like, adding the cheese to melt on top of them.

Then, just assemble your sandwiches (we suggest enlisting other campers to help with this process.) Now, for the magic: wrap them each in tin foil, and let them sit on the grate for about 4 minutes.

This final step combines everything perfectly, and the foil also helps to minimize the mess!

Campfire Lasagna

Yes, you read that correctly.

It’s totally possible to assemble a dreamy camping meal of lasagna — and we promise it won’t take anything near the amount of work you’re imagining.

To make it, you’ll need:

  • 1 dutch oven
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon of oregano
  • 1 tablespoon basil
  • 1.5 cups shredded mozzarella
  • 3 cups baby spinach
  • 2.5 cups your favorite pasta sauce
  • 12 oz. lasagna noodles

Then put about 25 coals onto your campfire, and give everything a moment to come to a flame.

Put the olive oil in your dutch, and give it a minute to heat up. Once that’s done, add 1/2 cup of the pasta sauce. Put one of the lasagna noodles down to create layer one. Then, add another 1/2 cup of the pasta sauce, along with a cup of the spinach and 1/3 cup of your cheese.

Repeat this process two more times. Add your spices on top.

Now, put the dutch oven on a bed of 8 coals. Then put the lid on the pot, and place the last 17 coals on top. Wait for about half an hour, and you’re done!

Spinach Dip for a Snack

Sometimes, the best camping food isn’t a complete meal at all. Instead, it’s a little pick-me-up that you can enjoy in between the bigger meals.

To pull of campfire spinach dip, you’ll need:

  • 3/4 cup of frozen chopped spinach
  • 3/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 package plain cream cheese
  • Tin foil
  • Crackers of your choice

If you’d like to spice up the dip further, you can add extras like green onions or artichoke hearts. But the above ingredients are the basics.

Just mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, and then fold it into a tin foil packet.

Set up your campfire and place the foil packet close to the hot coals for about half an hour. Then, gently open your packet, and enjoy with crackers.

One Final Tip for Camping Meals

While this is a list of incredibly easy campfire meals, keep in mind that you’ll need to find solutions that work for longer camping excursions.

After all, the last thing that you want to deal with is having to tote around fifteen different ingredients. Look for recipes that have a major overlap in overall ingredients. You could even consider finding some ingredients, like mushrooms or herbs, along the trial.

Also, break up the ingredients between your campers’ packs. There’s no reason why one person should be carrying around everything.

Above all, we suggest embracing meal planning before you go. For a great list of inspirational meals that fit within a camping theme, visit the Camp Food website to help design your menu. Check it out here.

Need More Campfire Cooking Hacks?

We hope this post has helped you to understand that it’s possible to create beautiful camping meals out of nothing more than an open fire and a willingness to branch out of canned beans and hot dogs.

Just remember to plan ahead as much as possible, to prevent people from getting too hangry along the trail.

Of course, in addition to the right campfire cooking prep, you’ll also need to think about a packing list. You should also figure out the routes you plan to take, who should come along, and how strenuous you want your camping trip to be.

No matter what kind of vacation you’re going on, we want to help you to get the most out of it. Keep checking back with our blog for more advice on how to make that happen.

What better place is there to meet a guy than in a bar. The bar is the kind of place where these guys flock on weekends. They fancy taking the bar as this is one of the places where you have no obligation as per say and starting up a conversation is very easy. However, have in mind that the bar has very many kinds of people. There are those that are there to celebrate, there those that have just been laid off from work and are all stressed up(I suggest you skip those), there is the kind that is there for the same exact reason that took you there, to look for someone to hook up with. These are the kind of people that really know how to get things going really fast.

2. In events

Most of the places will always have this big event every weekend. This is the kind of thing that will get the attention of even the hottest guys around. Get yourself a ticket to such events and wait for the magic to happen. Most of the men actually have hobbies and they get involved in the most of the times. So it will be very easy to find all the men stuck in the stadium waiting for a match to start or somewhere waiting to see their favorite artists. It is also good to at least get to know some basics of whatever event you choose to attend. It will not be a good thing to look as though you were just there for the guys.

3. Parties

Now Monday to Friday is a no-go zone for parties but wait till Friday evening as they welcome the weekend this is the place where you can find a lot of men. Weekends are all about dropping the formalities and taking up the casual you and being just you. Parties are actually designed in such a way that one of the main objectives there is having fun and making new friends and knowing new people. Parties are actually very considerable when it comes to meeting new guys. However, it is not a very good idea to let out the party animal in you that goes way out of control. It is actually good to have your limits and this way you will get some guys attention ASAP as they try to engage you.

4. Trips

What do I mean? What am I talking about? I am talking about trips. Sometimes the thing that you are actually lacking is exposure and some new energy running. Get to visit new places and get to meet different people there. A good place to try visiting are the popular cities. This is actually because they have a lot of people there both local and international. You will get to be exposed to different cultures, languages, and ways. This is not only exciting but is also one of the best ways to keep yourself young and radiant. The good thing about traveling is that you can make your trip as exciting as you want. You can start up a chat with someone on your journey on the bus or on the plane, you can get some pretty good connections and also good investment ideas while away.

5. Online

Now with the changing world and trend, the one thing I have learned is that you don’t need to go to the store down the street to get a shoe, all you need to do is check it up from your phone or laptop and bam! there it is. This also applies to this case. You can actually find some guys on the internet via the many dating sites or even social media sites. The good thing about social media sites and the internet is that there is a variety and you can take your time and analyze someone even before you meet. This is not only a place to get someone to hang out during the weekend but also a place you can find a chat buddy throughout the week. The online world has a variety to offer too from fantasy calls to hookups and even dating sites. You can also get guys from both locally and internationally.

October 11, 2018

Do you want to do some traveling but aren’t sure if you can afford it? Here are 8 simple budget travel tips that everyone should take advantage of.

For those of us who love to travel, there’s nothing better than getting out of town and exploring new places. The world is a big exciting place, with exotic and beautiful locations just waiting to be discovered.

Travel can be a challenge for those on a tight budget. Yet there are budget travel tips that can help you learn how to travel cheap. Learning how to travel cheap is a great way to do the things you enjoy without breaking the bank. Let’s take a look at some great tips for exploring the world without spending a fortune!

8 Budget Travel Tips Everyone Should Take Advantage Of

Do you want to do some traveling but aren’t sure if you can afford it? Here are 8 simple budget travel tips everyone should take advantage of.

1. Learn to Travel Light

Learning to pack as little as possible when you travel will help save money in several ways. For example, you can avoid checked luggage fees by bringing only a carry-on backpack. This also allows you to take advantage of traveling on budget airlines.

Another advantage of a small backpack is squeezing onto small buses or taxis where there is limited space. Just keep in mind that in order to get everything you’ll need for the trip into a small bag you’re going to need to get extremely skilled at packing.

2. Work as You Travel

Yes, you heard that correctly. If you’ve been bitten by the travel bug yet have limited funds, you can always take on small jobs in the locales where you are staying. Perhaps wash dishes, clean houses, or even do volunteer work in exchange for food and lodging.

There are websites like Work Away and WWOOF that can hook you up with employment and volunteer opportunities, or sites like HouseCarers that enable you to care for someone’s home while they are away.

All it takes is a little ingenuity and creativity to make the most of traveling the world with a minimal amount of cash.

3. Try Not to be too Picky

One of the secrets to traveling on a budget is to seek cheap destinations and to not be overly picky about the quality of your accommodations. Destinations like India, Thailand and Vietnam are perfect for traveling for next to nothing. And Europe has a wealth of gorgeous budget-friendly cities just waiting to be explored.

Keep in mind that traveling for under $50 a day often requires sleeping in hostels, dining on sandwiches and cheap coffee, lots of walking and doing without certain creature comforts like hot water or air-conditioning.

Here is a great site to learn more about booking a flight to India.

4. Learn to Take Your Time and Travel Slow

It’s human nature to want to get to your destination as quickly as possible. Especially in the modern world. But high-speed forms of transportation like planes, trains and buses burn up a lot of cash in a matter of hours.

Learning to slow down can help save money and allow you to appreciate the places you visit. Take the time to learn the language, get to know some of the locals, and simply chill out and soak up the atmosphere.

You can also save money by taking slower and cheaper forms of transportation, such as a sleeper train. Just be sure to pack a deck of playing cards for the long hours of downtime.

5. Check Out Free Museums

Believe it or not, even the most beautiful museums in the world often offer free admission on certain days of the week or on special occasions. This a great thing to keep in mind when planning your trip. Museums are the perfect way to spend the afternoon, and you can save as much as $20 per person.

There’s no reason to get in a hurry. Slow down, enjoy everything the museum has to offer, and allow yourself to be inspired by amazing works of art by the masters.

6. Book a Package Deal

Travelers often spend a great deal of time online looking for rock-bottom prices on airline tickets. Smart travelers do the same thing for hotel prices. Because hotels often offer package deals to save you money on your room, meals, various forms of transportation, and even guided tours.

You might not be aware of these deals because hotels typically don’t advertise their special discount prices.

7. Toss Your Guidebook

Our next recommendation for squeezing the most bang from your traveler budget is to ditch your Lonely Planet book and get recommendations from the locals instead. Many of the best bars, restaurants, hostels, and local hotspots never make into the pages of printed guidebooks.

Locals know the scene and are a great source of tips for finding those cool places you would have otherwise missed. They know how to avoid touristy spots and find the awesome cafes and restaurants located off the main strips.

Bartenders are always a wealth of knowledge and can give you the low-down on neighborhood spots where you can enjoy world-class meals without going broke.

8. Take Advantage of Public Transportation

When you travel to a major city, skip yellow taxis and Uber and opt for a ride on public transportation instead. Jumping on a bus or the subway is a great way to get anywhere in the city quickly, and typically only for a few dollars.

Public transportation is also a much more budget-friendly way of getting around town than dealing with a rental car, especially if you are traveling in a foreign country and aren’t familiar with the area or the local traffic laws.

Making the Most of Your Travel Dollar
