Ideas for Throwing a Beer Tasting Party at Your Home

November 10, 2021

Many people love to throw home beer tasting parties for their friends. They love to throw open the double French doors and enjoy sharing favorite craft beers with people in a comfortable environment. In this post, you’ll find information about how to plan a successful party, what to serve at it (both food and drinks), plus some tips on what types of games you can play with guests.

1) Always invite a variety of friends

If you’re going to spend your money on a new beer, then it might as well be tried by people that can give their honest opinion. The perfect mix is usually about 50% casual drinkers and 50% experienced craft beer fans. Inviting too many experts may result in them being dismissive of the beers you’re trying, while inviting too many casual drinkers may result in them being overwhelmed. Sticking with the middle ground will ensure that everyone has a good time and enjoys their beer selections.

Create an invite list. Make sure to include all of their names on your guest list so you know who is attending ahead of time.

2) Choose a variety of beers to serve

There are two main types of beer—lagers and ales. Lager is the most common type you’ll find in stores. They’re light-bodied with low alcohol content (usually less than four percent). Ales have more body, higher ABV’s (alcohol by volume), and have a more pungent, more distinct taste. In addition to the difference in their characteristics, you’ll need to consider how much experience your guests have with beers before deciding which type of beer tasting party you want to throw.

Ales: A wide variety of ales are available, and most people will be able to find something they enjoy. Experienced craft beer drinkers will enjoy trying new and exciting combinations, while casual drinkers may find a pint too strong.

Lagers: Lager’s are the most popular type of beer in America, so chances are your guests have tried them before. They’re straightforward to drink but often lack character or complexity. Casual drinkers are likely to enjoy them, while experts may find them boring.

3) Serve a variety of snacks

It’s tough to enjoy a beer on an empty stomach. You can’t go wrong with pairing your beers with chips and salsa, pretzels, or cheese. Experienced drinkers may handle more filling foods like wings or mini-pizzas, while casual drinkers will probably prefer lighter options. In addition to the type of food, you’ll want to consider how filling it is and whether or not your guests will be able to enjoy their beers while eating.

Snacks: Chips and salsa, pretzels, cheese mini-pizzas, wings, more filling foods (ex: chili), lighter snacks (ex: popcorn).

4) Put together a fun game or two

Whether you want to play trivia, cards, or beer pong, the most important thing is that your guests are engaged and have a good time. If they’re not competitive by nature, it’s best to avoid more traditional games like Monopoly. In addition to making sure they’re having fun, you’ll need to choose games that will let guests relax and enjoy their beers; otherwise, they may be too distracted to talk or make meaningful conversation.

Games: Trivia (ex: Cards Against Humanity), beer pong drinking games, more relaxed social games (ex: Scrabble), no traditional party games (ex: Monopoly).

5) Have enough glasses and bottles

It’s no fun to let a perfect beer go to waste because someone drank it from the wrong type of glass. You’ll need about one bottle or can per person (that adds up fast), plus an extra set for yourself. Most craft beers come in 22-ounce varieties, which you can either split between two glasses or serve as a single full-sized pour. If your guests prefer pints, then just make sure to have enough pint glasses for everyone.

Glasses: Pint glasses (ex: shaker), snifter glasses, tulip glasses, taster glasses, bottle/can amount, one bottle or can per person, one extra set.

6) Have a backup plan

The last thing you want is for people to get bored and leave. If it’s starting to look like there won’t be enough beer or snacks, make sure that everyone knows they can feel free to bring some of their own. In addition, consider planning a few more activities in case things get dull. If you want to avoid any potential problems, consider having a friend or family member over for moral support just in case.

Backup Plan: More snacks (ex: chips & candy), bring your beer friends or family for moral support.

7) Choose a location that’s fun for everyone

You may be thinking about throwing your beer tasting party in the comfort of your home, which is an option. If you’re looking to mix it up, though, consider hosting at one of these places instead:

Location:  Your home outdoor location (ex: backyard), bar, restaurant brewery, pub.

Depending on the type of beers you have, different snacks will pair better than others. It’s also essential to make sure everyone has a good time and can relax while trying new things. To do this, put together an engaging game or two that matches your guests’ interests. You’ll also need to take into consideration how many glasses and bottles you’ll need. Last but not least, make sure everyone knows they can bring some of their own if required.

Can You Start a Craft Brewery with a 20 Barrel Brewhouse?

September 30, 2021

State of the Keg | 2014 Beer Issue | Style Weekly - Richmond, VA local news, arts, and events.

From large multinational brewing companies to microbreweries, the process of brewing is diverse. This diversity also depends on the kind of beer you want to produce as well as the level of automation you desire. Large breweries typically have distinct sections that handle specific brewing phases. Microbreweries, on the other hand, perform their operations in one room.

Despite the disparity in size, the entire process remains the same as it involves a simple biochemical process. Microbreweries or craft breweries are independently owned and are smaller compared to corporate breweries. However, in recent times, this difference does not hold much meaning as some major brewers now have craft breweries but in a large form. You can visit this website to learn about craft brewing in different parts of the world.

So if you are a beer lover and have been thinking about starting a craft brewery, you should know that it requires time and patience. You also need to plan carefully before venturing into the business. We understand that starting any business is difficult and breweries are capital-intensive. Therefore, this guide will help you to get started.

How to Choose the Right Brewhouse Size

The first thing you want to do when starting out as a brewer is to secure a space for production. But do you know the size of brewhouse to use? Different levels of production, including the kind of beer you want to produce, calls for different sizes of tanks and brewing systems.

You need to consider this equation when choosing a brewhouse size:

(Annual production)/ (number of brews produced each week x number of weeks you brew in a year) = brewhouse size

Or:

(Size of the brewhouse) x (number of brews produced each week) x (number of weeks you brew in a year) = annual production

For instance, if you plan to brew 5200 bbl annually and five times each week all through the year, here’s what you will get when you use the equation:

Size of the brewhouse x 52 brewing weeks x 5 brews per week = 5200 bbl

5200 bbl/ (52 brewing weeks x 5 brews per week) = size of the brewhouse

5200 bbl/ 260 = 20 bbl

If you were wondering whether you can start a craft brewery with a 20-barrel brewhouse, this example is an ideal answer. However, you can be flexible with your batch size each week because it is possible that you may not have the manpower to match the machine’s capacity.

Note that the calculation above is a basic guideline. Many factors such as the types and styles of craft beer may alter the production timing or capacity. Therefore, measurements will not be the same for every brewer. You can visit https://www.thespruceeats.com/need-to-know-beer-styles-4051730 to discover different styles of craft beer.

Brewery Equipment

San Diego Micro Brewery Tour 2021

After deciding on the size of brewhouse, you need to get the necessary equipment for brewing. They include:

The Brewhouse

While a brewhouse refers to a place for brewing beer, it is also a collection of the components required for starting the brewing process. These components include:

  1. Whirlpool
  2. Boil kettle
  3. A tank for hot liquor
  4. Lauter tun
  5. Mash mixer

Microbreweries usually use two-vessel brewhouses like the 20-barrel brewhouse. They combine the tank for hot liquor, mash mixer, and lauter tun in one vessel while the other vessel contains the whirlpool and boil kettle. The first vessel mashes the malt as well as any other grain you choose to use, then extracts the wort in liquid form.

The other vessel adds hops and all the ingredients for your beer into the wort, then boils the mixture. When the wort settles, the solid particles produced during the crushing process will be separated. Brewhouse capacity is usually in bbl (barrel), approximately thirty-one US gallons.

Tanks for Fermentation

After preparing the wort, the next stage is fermentation. You need to transfer the wort to your fermentation tanks to allow the yeast to convert the sugar inside the wort to carbon dioxide and alcohol. The tanks are shaped like cones at the bottom to allow you to recover and reuse the yeast.

Brite Tanks

These tanks are used for secondary fermentation. After the first fermentation, the beer filters and pumps into the brite tanks for further clarification and carbonation. Afterward, it is transferred into bottles, kegs, or cans for consumption. If you own a pub, you can serve the beer from the tanks. You can find a brewing system from ABS to match the level of production you want to achieve.

Kegs

Whether you want to serve customers from the brite tanks or you will package the beer in cans or bottles, you still need to store it in kegs. Brewpubs, restaurants, and bars can serve or sell beer in kegs. You also need to wash the kegs to prevent the beer from tasting bad or spoiling. Microbreweries can wash by hand since their level of production is sizeable. But larger breweries need to invest in a special washer for greater efficiency.

Factors That Affect the Costs of Brewery Equipment

We already hinted that setting up a brewery is capital-intensive. Hence, you need to have an estimate of the costs of equipment, which largely depends on your speculated volume of production. Apart from the size of your brewhouse, other factors to consider when estimating how much brewery equipment costs are:

The Material Used in Making the Equipment

The equipment for brewing is made from different materials, but the commonest materials are stainless steel and copper.

Stainless Steel

Most commercial breweries today use stainless steel kettles. These modern kettles are clad with copper to give them a traditional appearance. However, the cladding is cosmetic since it does not touch the wort directly.

Stainless steel kettles react with a few chemicals like chlorine. But the equipment will not affect the beer flavor if you avoid cleaning it with bleach. Stainless steel has more strength than copper. Therefore, you need to consider this when choosing equipment since the kettle is pressurized when it boils the wort.

Copper

Traditionally, brewing equipment, especially the kettle that boils the wort, is made from copper. Copper ores smelt easily into pure forms and are readily available. They are very good conductors of heat, which is a desirable quality for brewing.

The drawback of this material is that it can react with a lot of chemicals. This process can add metallic flavors to your beer. Also, many cleaning solutions can corrode the material.

Used or New Brewery Equipment

The costs of brewery equipment depend on whether you want to buy a used or new set. If you are starting a microbrewery with a limited budget, you may compromise with respect to your purchase decision. But it is not a bad idea to start with used equipment, provided it is functional and can produce results. As you progress, you can get newer equipment.

The major things you need to start your brewery are:

  1. Kettles
  2. Boilers
  3. Fermentation tanks
  4. Kegs
  5. Storage tanks
  6. Cooling equipment
  7. Filters
  8. Refrigerators
  9. Bottlers
  10. Cleaning tools

If you want to test the waters by starting with home brewing, you need to get equipment that is suitable for that purpose. You can read this article to know the essential equipment for home brewing.

Conclusion

Like any other business, starting a craft brewery requires careful planning. We discussed how to choose an appropriate brewhouse size after securing a place for your production. We also discussed the brewing process and the equipment you need for each phase. Finally, the materials used in producing the equipment and whether it is a used or new equipment will determine its cost.

What Are the Different Types of Wines That Exist Today?

September 14, 2021

Did you know wine is one of the oldest drinks in history?

People have been drinking fermented grapes for thousands of years. Because of this long history, there are now so many iconic types of wines to choose from. It’s a little confusing when you’re buying wine online.

Don’t panic, we’re here to introduce you to the most common types of wines. Discover how wineries make them, what distinguishes each drink from the other, and what kind of meals they pair with. Continue reading our wine guide below to learn more:

Red Wine

When it comes to wine types, you need to start with the staple choice: red wines. Deep reds are often the choice for a nice romantic dinner or a gourmet meal. The pinnacle choice of them all is the pinot noir.

Pinot Noir

Many refer to pinot noir as the sexiest wine in the cellar. It’s a light to medium red with a strong fruity tinge. With a sniff and a sip, you’ll immediately taste the red-aroma fruit, earthiness, and a touch of spiciness.

This mixture makes it one of the best wines for a date. Bring this out on your anniversary, for example. It goes well with veal.

Pinot Noir wine uses Vitis vinifera (pinot noir) grapes, which come from France and relies on dry wine fermentation. This requires pressing the grapes and then fermenting the sugar using yeast.

Cabernet Sauvignon

This is a deep red wine that uses a grape breed born from the mixture of cabernet franc and sauvignon blanc. Wineries also age this type of wine in barrels of oak, further giving it a deep, heavy taste. The oak also adds a tinge of spice and vanilla to the wine.

Cabernet Sauvignon is the drink to pull out for a formal dinner and it goes well with deep red meat, such as a steak. This is the kind of drink you should request when dining out and you want to feel fancy.

Merlot

Merlot is a common one but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad choice. You simply need to know what you’re looking for. Make sure to follow the complete buying guide when shopping for a bottle of Merlot.

Like Pinot Noir, this is a dry wine. This type of drink also comes with a touch of plum and black cherry.

One good thing Merlot has going for it is its chemical composition. It has the right amount of resveratrol to help the heart.

White Wine

Unlike red wines, white wine requires skinning the grapes before proceeding to fermentation. As the name suggests, this type of wine relies on white grapes instead of red ones. A good starting point for white wines is the Chardonnay:

Chardonnay

This is one of the most common white wines in the United States but the grapes grow globally. It’s a medium to full-bodied drink that requires fermentation in oak barrels, giving it a soft, buttery touch.

Chardonnay goes well with chicken and creamy dishes.

Sauvignon Blanc

If you’re looking for a light white wine that comes with a touch of crispy fruit flavor and a dry mix, try out a Sauvignon Blanc. For added vanilla and spice, look for one aged in oak. This is the drink to bring out when you’re dining on grilled chicken, scallops, or mixed vegetables.

Pinot Grigio

This is one of the most iconic white wines from Italy. It’s a light, dry white wine that comes with a soft touch of apple or pear. If you’re looking for a wine that goes well with seafood, this should be your first choice.

Sparkling Wine

Looking for wine with a bit of a fizzy punch? You should try out sparkling wine. This is wine mixed with carbon dioxide, which gives it its iconic fizz.

Champagne

Champagne is easily one of the most popular wines in the world. Keep in mind that all champagne is sparkling wine but not the other way around. A drink is only considered champagne if it comes from the Champagne region, found in France.

This sparkling wine comes with a soft fruity taste and a lighter alcoholic touch. Champagne is the ideal choice for celebrations but it can still go well with almost any dish. However, it’s the optimal choice if you’re having seafood.

Prosecco

If Champagne is from France, Prosecco comes from Italy. It’s one of the best sparkling wines out there due to its sweeter taste. This likely comes from the fact that Prosecco uses sweet Glera grapes.

Unlike Champagne, most wineries use the tank-fermentation method for Prosecco. This gives it bigger bubbles. This makes it a visually pleasing drink and a popular choice for cocktail parties.

Rosé

This is the most unique wine on this list because it’s a mixture of two drinks. Traditional Sparkling Rosé starts with a glass of Chardonnay. You then mix a touch of Pinot Noir to give it its iconic pink look.

Rosé is a great drink to start with if you’re not into wines. It’s a medium drink that’s light enough for newcomers but heavy enough for you to feel an impact. This is a good choice for early dinners or if you’re celebrating with friends.

There are other variations but the basics remain the same. This drink requires taking a white wine and adding a kiss of red.

Try Out the Different Types of Wines Today

Now you know the different types of wines, which ones to pick, and how wineries make them. Don’t hesitate to revisit this list when you want to go over which red, white, or sparkling wine to choose for a special occasion.

3 Things You Should Know Before Opening Up Your Own Brewery

August 30, 2021

If you have a passion for all things beer then it’s only natural that you’d be passionate about opening up a brewery of your own. With so many competing breweries out there, however, it’s important that you equip yourself with the right information to ensure your success. If you’re considering opening up your own brewery, then you should follow these tips before you dive in.

Know The Basics First

Regardless of what kind of business you’re starting— whether it’s a brewery or a hair salon, it’s important that you know the basics of starting a business. There’s a lot that goes into it, and a lot can go wrong during the process. It’s critical that you have the right information under your belt to avoid mishaps due to all of the complexities involved.

You’ll need to know things like, what the startup costs are and what kind of equipment you’ll need. Know what company to contact for a walk-in cooler and how to obtain all of your necessary permits and licenses. Do your research so that you know exactly what you need and how to do it. Otherwise, you’ll be stumbling in the dark.

Brand Yourself Carefully

Choosing a brewery name is only the beginning of creating a successful brand. You’ll also need to create a logo, and establish an aesthetic. Identify who your target customer is and create your look and feel based on the appeals of that type of person.

The more that your brand reflects the personality of your ideal customer, the more that you can encourage brand loyalty, and repeat business.

Location is everything when choosing the place for your brewery. If you’re in an undesirable location then you won’t have many customers. You want to make sure that you’re near where the people are. Whether you’re near businesses that attract employees for after-work happy hour, or in a residential area where people will flock to you as their local watering hole, the idea is to choose somewhere that promises success.

Your Success Depends on More Than Just Good Beer

The mark of a great brewery starts with great beer. However, brewing great beer is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to appealing to your customers. You’ll need to take everything into consideration from the floor plan to whether you’re planning on offering food.

The decor is also an important part of creating a positive experience for your customers. Choose decor that makes people feel comfortable and at ease, and ultimately reflects your brewery’s brand mission.

Lastly, the staff you choose will be a huge part of the success of your business. A great staff that cares about your customers as much as you do is the key to happy clients!

The Success of the Craft Beer Industry: Supporting your Local Community

June 29, 2021

Australians are right up there when it comes to beer drinking and with the evolution of the microbrewery sector, suddenly, Aussie beer drinkers have much more of a choice when it comes to premium craft beer. Locally produced pale ales and pilsner beers offer the beer connoisseur rich taste experiences, with award-winning beers that are available on premises and via their website.

Supporting Local Businesses

We should all do what we can to support local businesses, especially during these troubled times and when you drink craft beers from a local brewery, you are supporting your community, which is a better alternative to adding to the profits of the huge corporations that mass-produce beer. If you would like to sample great craft beer, visit Hairyman’s cellar bar in Sydney, where you can enjoy great beers in a lively atmosphere.

The Best Tasting Beers

The Sydney microbrewery produces a range of excellent pale ales and pilsners, using old European recipes and locally grown ingredients and part of the enjoyment is sampling the range to find the one(s) that hits the spot, so to speak. When you visit the cellar bar, you can buy some takeout once you’ve found your favourite craft beer and after that, ordering online is easy. For special occasions, you are advised to book a table, which can be done via their website and this guarantees you and your group a spot.

Government Support

Whatever else you might think about our current administration, they do actively support local businesses and when a group of small brewers get together to formulate a business plan, they can receive a lot of support from the government. If you live in or near any Australian city, you are likely to be near a privately owned microbrewery and Google will help you find venues where you can drink premium beer that is brewed by experts. If you’re planning a party in the near future, here’s some information about BBQ grills.

Great Value for Money

Regardless of how much beer you drink, switching to craft beer will see a saving; unlike the big breweries, the microbrewery is not looking to pitch their products at inflated charges; Of course, they need to make a profit, but when you compare prices with the mainstream mass-produced beers, craft beer is always favourable. This means you are getting a better product for less money than you would normally spend; add that to the local community support and craft beer is the obvious choice. Click here for microbrewery licensing information from the NSW government.

Drinking at Home

The pandemic has probably changed your drinking habits, preferring to crack open an ice-cold craft beer from the fridge and with online solutions from your local microbrewery, fine beer can be delivered to your door. No doubt your partner also enjoys a cold beer from time to time and when your friends realise you have a fridge full of locally brewed craft beer, you can expect a lot of visitors.

Benefits And Facts Of Grills

May 25, 2021

There are many things that people should take into notice when deciding to buy a grill. If you are a beginner and want to learn more about grilling and what benefits and facts hide behind it, then this is the perfect article for you to read about.

One of the critical factors amongst grilling is the fuel. It all comes down to what fuel you want for your grill. Fuel comes in various sorts, but the result will be the same. This means that the input is different, but the output will always be heat.

Some people go for gas grills; others go for electric, wooden pellets, or even charcoal grills. It depends on what the person wants. If they want to protect the environment, then they purchase a gas grill. If you are all in for the taste and the flavors, you should definitely go for the charcoal or pellets grill.

BTUs

This is the thing that most people are not aware of when shopping. It stands for British Thermal Units, and it is used for measuring energy. When going shopping, you should look at how big the number is. If the BTU is a higher number, with higher energy, it requires more fuel, but it will also generate more heat.

This applies if you are going to shop for gas grills. It should also be noted that if the number is higher, it does not mean that the results will be better, and it does not mean that the product is way better than the others.

For example, if the grill is made out of aluminum, it will generate heat faster, but it will cool it down quicker. This results in not-so-efficient results. If you have a grill that is made of aluminum but it also has high BTU numbers, it will most likely be not so efficient. There are many things to be considered if you want everything to be just perfect.

Cooking area

Suppose your plan is to cook meat made simple, like burgers, steak, hot dogs, or anything else that is smaller. In that case, the manufacturer often leaves a note saying what things can be made on their product. Other than that, it provides information about how much stuff can be put onto their product.

Want to experiment and often have the desire to cook a bit larger food? If so, consider getting a bigger grill. As mentioned above, it is all about your needs and requirements.

Portability and size

As it is widely known, grills can come in very different sizes. Some products that can be portable are often made in smaller sizes so that they can go from location A to location B without having any trouble.

Portable products are made so they can fit your car perfectly and not worry you whether you are going to have the space to put it or not. If you are the person that does not bring their grill with them, then you should go for the size for sure.

If you can afford it, there are many products out there that will blow your mind off. If you have the desire to learn more, it is suggested to check this link.

Material

As talked about before, the material can be a really essential factor when it comes to buying the perfect product. Often when purchasing, people are wanting to get something that will last for many years. If you go for cheaper materials, this means that it is prone to breaking down much faster.

This is perfectly normal because as time goes by, rust starts to get its way into any kind of metal. This is why people are investing in purchasing products that have materials of higher quality.

Some people go for stainless steel because it is heavy, it will retain heat well enough, it is resistant to corrosion and rust. Another thing amongst the mentioned ones is that stainless steel is also impervious to salt. This is important only if you live next to a sea or an ocean.

Summary

If you want to learn how to cook well, then you should get a grill in your backyard for sure. It is an excellent way of pleasing your friends, enjoying the time you spend with them, grab a cold one, and just chill.

If you are the person that just wants to get it over with, you should go for an electric grill because they are the easiest to control. All you need is an outlet, and the rest is up to you.

In conclusion, it does not matter which product you go for, as long as you know what you are doing out there. Remember that it can be used even as a way to impress your boss or even your partner.
