Things that are constantly in use break over time, much sooner if they aren’t cared for properly. This factoid also applies to our planet, which has been swiftly degrading over the years. The climate has been rising consistently, resulting in various disasters like flooding and wildfires.
Experts say that circumstances will only worsen from here on out if we don’t take action. They believe that we, as a collective race, only have by 2030 to reverse the damage we have inflicted on the planet, lest we want to be wiped out from existence.
World leaders have already started to take action. However, we can’t expect them to do all the work. Through a few major and minor lifestyle changes, we, too, can do our part to help save our environment.
The Three Rs
“Reduce, reuse, recycle,” is a slogan that has been used for countless years to help raise awareness regarding waste. To this day, applying this statement to our daily routines can do wonders for our planet.
Reduction lessens the unnecessary waste that goes back into our environment. We can accomplish this by using alternatives to single-use items like cloth cotton rounds, metal straws, and reusable tote bags.
Reuse urges us to find new ways to use our goods so that they don’t have to immediately go to waste. For example, plastic bags can be kept in storage so we can bring them along when we go grocery shopping. As for old clothes, we can either repurpose them into rags or donate the ones still in good condition.
Recycling, on the other hand, is the process of using waste to create new items for the purpose of selling them. A great DIY example is taking juice packets and making them into fashionable purses. We can also help recycle by segregating our wastes, so that recyclable items can be brought to places where they can be repurposed.
Alternative Energy
The most used source of electricity is fossil fuel, which is harmful to our environment given the toxic substances it releases into our atmosphere. As such, we are encouraged to implement renewable sources of energy in our households instead of using traditional electricity.
- Solar
Solar power is perhaps the most common and accessible form of renewable energy. With the help of sunpower dealers, we can install solar panels of our choosing on our properties. These panels function to harness the sun’s light, converting it into direct current. After, the direct current will be transformed into alternating current by an inverter, which in turn powers our homes.
- Wind
The wind, similar to the sun, can be used as a source of energy thanks to the work of giant turbines. These massive structures function opposite to fans. Instead of harnessing the wind, turbines use it to spin the thin, giant blades that cause the rotor inside the turbines to move as well. Over time, electricity is generated through electromagnetic induction.
Unlike solar energy, wind energy is used to power large areas given the scale that it can produce electricity.
There are other ways that we can revise our current lifestyle. Taking public transportation, buying local produce — regardless of the change we make, we can still make a positive impact on the environment. All that needs to be done is to take action now.
