5 Money-Saving Tips for Gigging Musicians on a Shoestring Budget

October 28, 2017

The idea of being a starving artist for the sake of your art might seem romantic; however, the reality of being a struggling musician can definitely be stressful.

For those who want to gig full time or make the dream of becoming a professional musician a reality, a tight budget is most definitely the norm. This is especially true if you’re just starting out.

Thankfully, there are smart ways that musicians can keep more money in their pockets without sacrificing their sounds or their well-beings. With the following five tips in mind, you can make your rockstar aspirations a reality without blowing out your budget.

Harness the Power of “Free”

Despite popular belief, you don’t need to constantly buy new gear and effects in pursuit of new sounds. Sure, there might be a particular pedal or synth that you want to add to your arsenal; however, don’t neglect the free files and plugins out there. Especially when recordings, libraries and effects packs like the ultimate list of free Foley sound effects are out there specifically for musicians looking to save few bucks.

Hitch Rides with Fellow Musicians

Getting from Point A to Point B can be rough when you’re gigging with a bunch of gear that can weigh down your vehicle and ruin your gas mileage. As a result, carpooling with other musicians whether you’re going across town or across the country is a brilliant move where everyone wins. Not only do you save money by having everyone chip in for gas, but you also guarantee that everyone gets to the gig on time.

Be Willing to Part with Your Old Gear

Many musicians tend to hoard their gear due to sentimental value. But ask yourself: do you really need three or four synths that achieve the same function? Is the guitar gathering dust in your closet really necessary? Parting with old instruments is easy given the various places you can sell old gear and score quick cash as a result.

Beg and Borrow

Finally, consider one of the benefits of having good relationships with other musicians in your area: being able to exchange gear. Perhaps there’s a particular amp that you need for a bigger gig or there’s someone in your network that needs to borrow one of your mics for a recording session. If you have friends that are musicians, such exchanges are no big deal.

Positive relationships can help you save as you don’t have to splurge on new gear. As long as there’s a mutual sense of trust and respect for your gear, you’re golden.

Take Advantage of Word of Mouth

Oftentimes the best advertising you can do for yourself as a musician is totally free. Take advantage of unique music marketing strategies and the power of social media to score more gigs and put yourself in front of a bigger audience. If you aren’t serially sharing and “liking” fellow musicians’ work on Soundcloud and YouTube to get new eyes on your work, for example, what are you waiting for?

Just because you’re a full-time musician doesn’t mean that you need to make a ton of sacrifices to make ends meet. Instead, consider these tips as must-do’s to ensure that you’re being smart about where your money goes and that none of your hard-earned cash from gigging is wasted.

Is There A Trend Of Marijuana-Infused Liquids? Wine, Beer, Fruit Drinks?

October 27, 2017

Before weed started to become mainstream, the only way to really get a buzz was through alcohol (at least in a more public setting). However, now that marijuana is fast becoming normalized, it’s only natural that people will want to start combining the two. We are living in a transitional period for cannabis, with weed delivery and marijuana-infused beverages slowly turning into legitimate ventures. But how does this infusion work? Let’s take a sip.

What Kinds of Drinks are Being Infused?

Now that cannabis is more widely available, people are experimenting with it in a wide variety of ways. In addition to alcohol and beer, you can find weed in coffee, hot cocoa, juice, and even soft drinks. It seems that no matter what you drink, you can put a little weed in it. In fact, that sounds like a great slogan to us.

How Effective Is It?

At first, you may think that any amounts of weed in your beverage would be trace, right? Well, it turns out that it can be just as effective as any other method of ingestion. While most people think of edibles (pot brownies, Rice Krispy treats, etc.) as the go-to method for those who don’t smoke, it appears that drinking your weed is just as viable.

In fact, when compared to edibles, cannabis drinks can be even more potent and efficient. One of the issues for infused food is consistency. Some parts of the product may have more of an effect than others, and it’s impossible to tell until after the fact. However, with beverages, you get a more even distribution, and all it takes is a little shake.

Bottom Line

Gone are the days where you have to take a hit of medical cannabis along with a shot to get the pleasure of both drugs. Now, you can order a weed-infused cocktail and get the ball rolling. With such variety, coupled with marijuana delivery near me, you can get buzzed so much easier than ever before.

6 Steps to Cutting Ties To Suburban Life

October 27, 2017

So you want to say goodbye to suburban living, but don’t quite know how to make the leap? Here are a series of steps you can take that will outline the process so you can wrap your head around it and decide if it’s right for you.

Reassess Your Priorities

Settling down into suburban living usually doesn’t happen all at once. It’s usually a conscious decision made several years ago and conditions have likely changed since you first decided to grow roots. If lately you’ve been feeling like suburban life just doesn’t do it for you anymore, your priorities may have shifted.

Have a Family Meeting

Once you’ve determined that you’d like to have a more mobile lifestyle, it’s time to gather the family together and get a read on how everyone is feeling. Making this sort of transition only goes smoothly if everyone is on the same page. If it is going to cause a major upset in a child’s school life then it may be best to put it off until a later date. But if the family is all about travel, then you could definitely make it work!

Discuss the Realities of Full-Time RV Life

Suburban living might not be all it’s cracked up to be, but that doesn’t mean that living full-time in an RV is all butterflies and rainbows. RVs are great, but they come with a totally different list of possible drawbacks. Be honest with yourself and with each other and really try to imagine what life in an RV would be like on a day-to-day basis.

Create a One-Year Plan

Map out what one year would look like living in an RV. Where would you go? What would you eat? How would you pay for things? It’s these types of questions that you’ll want answered, but you don’t need to develop an extensive five-year plan.

A one-year time period Is perfect because you get to spend all four seasons away, including all of the major holidays. It lets you get a real sense of what life would be like going forward, and  you can make a more solid decision later based on your year experience.

Execute the Plan

The next step is to execute your plan and spend a year living in your RV. Since it’s just a one-year time frame you don’t have to do anything drastic like sell your house and car, but you could if you’re just tired of them.

Re-Evaluate After One Year

After one year it’s time to reflect on all that’s happened and how you currently feel. Do you still think it’s a good idea to ditch suburbia and embrace life on the road? Or did you scratch that itch and now you’re craving the comforts of a home and a regular routine?

From this new vantage point you’ll know what to do, and if you decide to re-enter suburban living it’ll be much easier since you’ll only have been gone for a year.

If you decide to continue on with your adventure you can make more final decisions like selling your house, car, and other personal belongings.

Weird and Wonderful Cultural Practices Around the World

October 25, 2017

Spain

Food fights are taken to the extreme in the small village of Buñol, where thousands gather every August to take part in La Tomatina — a squashed tomato fight. An estimated 145,000kg are thrown each time.

Another Spanish custom that revolves around food is Entierro de la Sardinia, which translates to Burial of the Sardine. Every year on Ash Wednesday a procession of mourners follow the likeness of a dead sardine, which is either buried or cremated when it reaches the end of the route. This ceremony is symbolic of burying the past and looking towards a hopeful future.

Germany

Want good luck before your wedding? In Germany a couple’s family and close friends gather the night before to break porcelain outside their house in a ceremony called Polterabend. The couple then clean up the mess, which signifies that they must work together through difficult times.

Thailand

Every November, residents in a town called Lop Buri prepare dishes of fruit, cakes, and sweets, which are served on long outside tables. But they’re not for people — this feast, known as The Monkey Buffet Festival, is for the native Macaque monkeys.

Mexico

Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead, 31st October–2nd November each year) is an opportunity for Mexicans to remember their loved ones. It’s a celebration of life, rather than a time of sadness, so graves are adorned with brightly coloured flowers and some communities even have parties in the cemeteries. Offerings of favourite foods, sugar skulls, a bread called pan de Muertos, and marigolds are made to the spirits.

England

Normally the English enjoy their Yorkshire puddings (a batter made from eggs, milk, and flour) on the side of a roast dinner. But once a year, in Brawby, giant Yorkshire puddings are cooked and then coated with thick layers of yacht varnish. Every pudding is big enough for someone to sit in and that’s exactly what happens — each oarsman rows his pudding across Bob’s Pond in a race to the finish line.

Working Out While Traveling for Men

October 19, 2017

As you know, my brother and I like to drink a lot of beer while traveling. We are what you would call “beer connoisseurs“. We like to enjoy local food dishes too, which aren’t always the healthiest options for us. Although we love to enjoy ourselves and indulge, we also like to stay fit and attempt to be at least a little bit healthy while traveling the world. So we compiled a list of our top workouts for men, while traveling. They are basic, but I find that keeping it simple is your best bet while on the road. If you tend to overcomplicate things, it doesn’t always get done.

Young man hiking at Crater Lake National Park, Oregon

Running

I know it sounds super simple and that you shouldn’t need to read this article to know that you can run to stay fit while traveling, but it isn’t always easy to find the motivation while on the road. This is my favorite type of workout because I can get it over and done with in 20-40 mins depending on my motivation level. When you get in the routine of it, no matter where you are, you will get up and run in the morning. By the evening, my motivation has gone down drastically, so I tend to go first thing in the morning. (Awesome new music always helps motivate me as well).

Body Weight Exercises

Planks, pushups and squats, oh my! Don’t underestimate the amount of sweat you can get going with just a 30 minute HIIT Training session (HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training). Basically you go as hard as you can for a minute, rest for 30 seconds and continue on for 7-20 minutes. (Keep in mind you can do a variety of interval times – these are just the ones I prefer). I know everyone thinks that mostly girls use Pinterest.com, but it’s a great resource for finding new exercises to keep your body on it’s toes and keep you interested/challenged in your workouts.

Local Exercise

I used to get nervous about going to a local gym, yoga or crossfit, but sometimes you just have to push yourself to go. It is much more motivating to get your butt kicked when you’re being told what to do. Or, often I am much more motivated once I’m at the gym. I figure I might as well give it my all when I’m already at the gym, rather than sometimes losing interest in my home workouts while traveling. Lastly, using a steroids shop – steroids-evolution.org to keep fit is much more common in other parts of the world.

Overall, keeping your workouts simple is your best bet while traveling. The actual workout part usually isn’t the challenge. The big challenge for most people is finding the motivation. Get a routine going on your vacation and you will be able to enjoy yourself a lot more. You will release endorphins and work off any of that extra indulgences :).

Please keep in mind that I am not a doctor or professional in this area. Any recommendations are simply from my own experience or word of mouth. I am not responsible or liable for any of the information you may follow in this article.
