5 Tips to repairing your car without a mechanic

December 12, 2018

Car repair and maintenance can drain your pocket. Most of us do not include car repair in our monthly budget. We remember to put down the price of gas, but we forget about most of the ongoing maintenance costs which can leave much to account for. We need our cars on the road, and so we have to pay for their repairs. However, we do not have to pay for every repair our car needs. With parts bought online, some simple tools, and a little knowledge, we can do many repairs ourselves without visiting a mechanic. Here are five tips to repairing your car without visiting a mechanic.

1. Changing Brake Pads. Replacing brake pads is an easy and inexpensive procedure that mechanics charge a lot to do. You need a wheel lug wrench, some wrenches, pliers, and a jack. Buying a set of new brake pads will cost you around $20 to $40 depending on the car and pad material. A mechanic will charge you about $250 per axle. The procedure is easy: take off the wheel, remove the hardware, pull out the worn out pads, push in the caliper piston, install the new pads, and reinstall the hardware. You should take around 1 hour to do all the four wheels. The new pads will last about 30,000 to 50,000 miles. Check the pads after every 10,000 miles, and when they fall under 2mm, it is time for another replacement.

2. Changing the Battery. Many people will call a mechanic to replace the battery, yet this is the easiest of all DIY repairs. A good battery lasts for about 4 years. Do not wait until you start having problems with your battery a new battery will cost about $80 while the dealer will charge you $200 to replace. You will need a set of wrenches to do the swap. The only warning is the order in which you remove and replace the cables. Remove the negative cable first and when you have installed the new battery, replace the negative cable last.

3. Oil Change. Buy a quality oil filter and the best oil you can afford from your local supplier. You will need a jack and jack stands, oil filter wrench, and a drain pan. You only have to purchase these items once, and they will last you for decades. Avoid changing the oil immediately after driving your car since it can be very hot. Check your manual when your vehicle needs an oil change.

4. Spark Plugs. Spark plugs are one of the easiest repairs you can do although these days you will rarely perform this service. Modern cars can maintain a gap of 100,000 miles between spark plug changes. You will only need a spark plug wrench, and you can save up to $250.

5. Replace a Headlight or Taillight. Not only are lights essential for clear vision, but you can also incur a traffic ticket if they are not working. The hourly repair rate of a garage is $100, but you can easily spend $25 to $50 per build. Bring your old bulb to the store to make sure you buy the right one. Never touch the bulb glass with your bare hands. The grease from your fingers can cause the bulb to burn out early.

4 Helpful bits of Advice about Protecting your Home

December 12, 2018

Statistics show that there has been a decline in in-home thefts since June 2015. However, home invasions occur when you least expect. There are still criminals who are interested in breaking into your home. You need to make it tough on them. The first step to prevent home crime is to eliminate opportunity. Most people only worry about night security. However, criminals also attack during the day when most people are not home; children are in school or running errands. Make sure that your home is secure during the day, at night, and every time you leave the house. Here are four helpful bits of advice about protecting your home.

1. Scout for weaknesses. Walk around the exterior of your home with the eyes of a burglar. If you can quickly notice that a window could be pried open, a thief will be able to come to the same conclusion. You can step further and ask the local police department to assess your home and help you identify your home’s weak spots. As you scout your home, take note of any expensive electronics and other items that are visible through the windows. Make some adjustments to keep these items out of sight. You do not want to tempt thieves with your expensive belongings.

2. Trim shrubs. You do not want to make it easy for burglars to hide when attempting to break into your house. Eliminate this option by trimming any hiding spots. A thief only needs a few minutes of cover to make his entry. With no place to hide, it is likely he will not even try. Some people plant thorny shrubs by their window to make it not only difficult to break in but painful. Also, as you trim your bushes, you need to erect a fence if you do not have one. A wall keeps unwanted visitors off your property. Most people prefer open chain-link or ornamental metal fencing.

3. Use the Garage. Keep expensive items like cars, bikes, and grills in the garage. Although it is a hassle to roll out the grill after every barbecue, leaving it outside makes it an easy target for criminals. If your area only offers street parking, always lock your car and pack it in a well-lit area. Use curtains on garage and basement windows. These areas do not need sunlight, so put curtains and blinds so that your valuables are not on display.

4. Know your neighbor. Crime rates are lower in tight-knit communities because neighbors are likely to look out for each other and can easily spot a stranger. Your neighbors are your best assets when it comes to security since they offer extra eyes and an outside perspective. If they have a different schedule of work, they might be around during the day when you are away and can alert you in case of anything suspicious.

Some people buy riffles to beef up their security. If you are thinking of going down this road, visit https://www.epicwilderness.com/custom-built-vs-fully-assembled-ar-15/ and learn about building and buying an AR-15 rifle.

How to Add Bass to Your Car Audio System

December 11, 2018

Entertainment is critical to a long a fulfilling life. Unfortunately, you cannot do much when you are driving because your hands and feet are in a fixed position. Moreover, you cannot distract yourself with watching videos on your smartphone among other things. Instead, you have to keep your eyes on the road. Therefore, listening to music is the only way you can entertain yourself while you are driving. Doing so entertains your passengers as well if you play the right music. The quality of your audio system is also important. For example, music sounds plain and unexciting when it lacks a sufficient level of bass. Here is a guideline on how to add bass to your car audio system.

1.    Examine Your Treble and Bass Controls
Many people think that adding bass to their cars audio system entails buying new equipment or upgrading the ones that they have. Doing so is unnecessary in some cases. For example, perhaps the problem lies with the treble and bass controls on your system. Check them to see if everything is all right. Remember, someone might have changed the settings without your knowledge. Perhaps one of the controls is malfunctioning and it could be the bass control. The treble tone control could be at its maximum as well. Add bass to your car audio system by fixing these tone control systems if they are the problem. You can upgrade them as well. Turn to other measures of adding bass to your car audio system if the controls are working correctly.

2.    Install a Free Air Subwoofer
A subwoofer refers to a loudspeaker component that reproduces low audio frequencies. The technical name for these frequencies is sub-bass and bass. Therefore, purchasing and installing a subwoofer in your car is the best move towards adding bass in it. However, what kind of subwoofer will you choose? Will you go for a free air subwoofer or an enclosed one? Many people erroneously believe that free air subwoofers have a sound cancellation problem. That is not the case. Trying it proves that it does not have this problem. All it needs is an air space behind it. For example, that space is the car trunk in most cases. This trunk acts like an enclosure isolating the sound from the speakers back. That is how it solves the sound cancellation problem.

3.    Tune Your Audio System
Adding a subwoofer and even an amplifier may be significant steps in adding bass to your audio system, but they are insufficient. The final step is tuning your car so that you can maximize its potential for bass. Remember, failing to tune your system leads to a distorted and muddy sound. That means you cannot entertain yourself and your passengers as you would want. You or your passengers might even cringe as the music plays. Tune your subwoofer amp today and see how pleasant the bass response will be. Tune the amplifiers separately if your audio system has other amps. Enable the bass boost function in your amp before you start the tuning process. Most of the amps manufactured today have this function.

Under the Sea: Spectacular Underwater Destinations for Adventure Seekers

December 5, 2018

Have a passion for scuba diving? You’ve only scratched the surface. Don’t miss these amazing underwater adventures for fearless travelers like yourself.

You know who’s got things all figured out?

Sebastian. Yes, that awesome crab from The Little Mermaid.

He knew that under the sea is better, unlike up on the shore where people work all day and slave away in the sun. If only Ariel listened to him, she wouldn’t have gotten into all that trouble. But that’s another story for another time.

The main point here is: under the sea is good. And underwater adventures, well, they’re even better. Here, we’ll do Sebastian proud by naming some of the best underwater destinations for adventure seekers like yourself.

Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, the Maldives

If you’re looking for cool things to do underwater that don’t involve getting your feet wet, Ithaa’s the place for you. The world’s first undersea restaurant, Ithaa seats 14 people, who get to see countless colorful fish and sometimes sharks, turtles, and stingrays.

But that’s not all. If you’re a foodie, you’ll love Ithaa’s fusion Maldivian cuisine with dishes like charcoaled reef lobster and coconut crusted légine.

And of course, when you’ve had your once in a lifetime Ithaa culinary experience, you can take advantage of Maldives’ wide-ranging facilities which offer everything from windsurfing to snorkeling to scuba diving and fishing.

The Great Blue Hole, Belize

One of the best places to go scuba diving, Belize’s Great Blue Hole is the largest sinkhole in the world. It’s also one of the most intriguing mysteries of the ocean. Despite its discovery in 1971, no one has mapped out its exact features.

This should tell you that the Great Blue Hole is for expert divers only.

But if you’re not one, it’s okay. You can see it from above – there are local companies who offer plane tours. Or you can book a boat tour and do some snorkeling instead.

The Azores, Portugal

Unlike the Cayman Islands and other scuba hotspots with dive shops aplenty, the Azores doesn’t allow for year-round diving. Its geography and latitude are better suited for other activities, such as watching and swimming with whales and dolphins.

If that’s right up your alley, you’ll be amazed to know that you could encounter up to five dolphin species in the Azores. These include striped dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, common dolphins, Risso’s dolphins, and Atlantic spotted dolphins.

Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey, California, USA

What’s an underwater travel itinerary without a visit to an aquarium? If you’re bringing your kids with you, the Monterey Bay Aquarium offers something for the whole family.

There’s the Kelp Forest, one of the tallest aquarium exhibits in the world. And of course, the lovely Open Sea, where you get to see almost all types of marine creatures including stingrays, turtles, sunfish, jellyfish, and more.

December 4, 2018

We walk, associate and even share some of our life’s sweetest memories with alcoholics without our knowledge. We can no longer afford to deny the fact that these people are part of our community and are part of our daily lives. We have brothers, sisters, fathers or even mothers who are knee deep into alcohol but yet we never notice and thus we are not able to help them early enough. We need to understand that alcoholism is very easy to hide at the start but with time it will be quite hard. We have seen certain signs but ignored and later came to realize that they were all true. Here are a couple of signs that we should watch out for.

bottles-3640682_1920.jpg

1. Untidiness

Now, this is one of the major signs that someone is actually on alcohol they will tend to be very untidy and also very unkempt. This is because they are not themselves while on these drugs and they are compelled to do anything they please. This

2. Memory lapse

Alcohol is quickly absorbed into the blood and into the system and most of the times it will reach the brain and it messes with the functionality of the brain. One of the things that it does is that it gives impaired judgment and also it causes memory lapse it is not hard to see an alcoholic forgetting things. Their memory is affected

3. Disorientation

This is one of the most evident ones and if you are one of those judgy people you will end up saying that these guys are pretending. This is a major effect of alcohol as it messes with the brain. However, ambrosia rehab center has dealt with this thousands of times and they are well experienced in handling such cases. They give specialized treatment to their patients and I tend to think that even the nature of their location is one of the things that contribute to their success rate. You can visit their website to learn more about this location.

4. Deteriorated health

Alcohol contains zero nutrients, zero fibers, zero calories, and even zero vitamins. It simply adds nothing to your body. It is a number one cause for poor health to most people. It actually takes from the user. It is not digested and it just lies in the stomach uselessly. It causes many people to lose appetite and it also burns the liver and affects the kidney adversely.

5. Financial strain

We can all agree that one of the most expensive things is a bottle of alcohol. However, they will range from the cheap stuff to the top shelf. Now the thing that makes many people undergo financial strain is because they are unable to work and it affects their income. One bottle of alcohol is never enough for an alcoholic. Another thing is that since it impairs one’s judgment. it will be very easy for someone to spend all his salary buying drinks for his buddies.

Be on the lookout for these signs and many more such as poor public relations, coordination problems and others that can help you tell whether you are dealing with an alcoholic.

December 2, 2018

If you are searching for the next country to visit, you might want to have India on your list. Given the diversity of the country in almost every aspect, you have a lot of reasons to go there. For first-time travellers, you might have a lot in mind about the country. Before you go there, you need to remember the India Travel guide to have a rich experience.

Drop all your expectations

You need to make sure that you forget everything that you know about India and immerse yourself in the experience. If you have already set your mind regarding what India will be like, you will not embrace the trip. You will think that you already know everything, and you will end up staying in your hotel. As long as you prepare the fundamental aspects of the trip, you have nothing to worry about.

Prepare your budget

The good thing about India is that it is not an expensive travel destination. You can head there on a budget airline and avoid spending a lot. You can also find budget hotels if you don’t want to splurge on expensive accommodation. Finding meals is also easy since there are lots of affordable street foods and restaurants. As long as you can find a clean and safe place to dine, it is perfectly okay. However, it is not the same in all parts of the country. You need to create a budget depending on which part of India you intend to visit.

Don’t be afraid of talking to the locals

Indians are very warm and accommodating people. They love welcoming tourists like you. Tourism is a significant aspect of the country’s economy, and almost all parts of India have tourists coming over throughout the year. Some locals might be quite shy about speaking with foreigners at first, but they will start enjoying your company as soon as you warm up to them. A lot of them also speak English well, so communication won’t be an issue. However, it helps build a relationship if you try your best to speak a few local words.

Pack well

Depending on how long you will be travelling and where you will be heading, you need to be smart when packing your stuff heading to India. Make sure that you bring the right clothes. Women have to be modest with what they wear. You also need to prepare for the heat of the sun. If you are heading to the wilderness, as India has beautiful forests, you need to prepare the things you need to enjoy the experience.

Prepare for the possibility of getting sick

You might get sick because of weather changes if you came from a cold country. You might also get sick because of the food you eat. Don’t panic if something happens. Your body might still be adjusting to the food you are not familiar with. You can take medicine right away, and you won’t face this problem. You can also head to a local hospital if things turn bad.

India has a lot to offer, and you want to experience its richness as you go there for a trip.

Tasmania Travel Guide: Why You Should Go and What to Do There

November 26, 2018

Many people to think of visiting Tasmania on their next adventure, but they should! Here is your ultimate Tasmania travel guide so you’re prepared to go.

If you want to travel somewhere with amazing views, incredible food, and good people, then Tasmania is your destination. Tasmania is a popular island state in Australia. It hosts a unique and lively culture you’ll fall in love with.

Tasmania offers an experience you’ll never see anywhere else. Its beaches are breathtaking.

But beyond the beach and sightseeing, Tasmania offers plenty of fun things to do for travelers of all walks of life. But many people still don’t travel to Tasmania often, or as often as they should.

Are you not convinced you should go to Tasmania? Continue reading and know everything there is to know about Tasmania travel.

Tasmania Travel: Why You Need to Go

Here are some facts about Tasmania and why you should go.

What is Tasmania?

Before you understand why you need to go to Tasmania, you need to know what Tasmania is.

Tasmania, often called Tassie, is a lone island off the coast of Australia. It’s about 150 miles away from Australia’s southern state, Victoria and is the smallest state in Australia.

The man who discovered Tasmania is Abel Janszoon Tasman, and the island was named after him. Tasmania is best known for its incredible beaches and awe-inspiring mountain ranges. Surprisingly, animal life is sparse compared to the Australian mainland.

But Tasmania is famous for one animal: the Tasmanian Devil. This is a carnivorous marsupial which is larger and more vicious compared to other marsupials. While the Tasmanian Devil isn’t violent, it does attack its prey when hungry.

Now that you know some facts, here’s why you should visit Tasmania.

Tasmania is Beautiful

Tasmania is one of the most breathtaking places you’ll ever visit. Their beaches are like something out of a fantasy. The mountain ranges look gorgeous on the shore.

And there are plenty of hills and cliffs you can climb and get a better view of this amazing island.

We will go over everything to do. But some of the most beautiful places are the capital Hobart, Freycinet National Park (home to Wineglass Bay), Cradle Mountain, and St. Helen’s Beach.

Tasmania Has a Gruesome History

If you’re the historical traveler, you’ll get a kick out of Tasmania. As mentioned previously, Tasmania was discovered by a Dutch navigator in 1642.

But for the next couple hundred years of its existence, Australian convicts were transferred to Tasmania.

Because of its weak penal system, the island was crime-ridden. This story is a selling point for Tasmanian tourists, who can learn more about Tasmania’s destructive past at the most famous penal settlement, Port Arthur Historic Site.

Great for Hiking

If you love traveling for all the hiking adventures, Tasmania should be on the top of your list. With all of the cliffs, hills, and mountains, you won’t get enough of hiking here.

A favorite hike for tourists is visiting Wineglass Bay. It’s a two-hour hike and well worth it.

But this isn’t the only hike you should take. Tasmania has a plethora of travel hikes and national parks you can explore.

Some of the Greatest Food You’ll Eat

If you travel for the food, Tasmania should also be on your list. They boast some of the best food in Australia. Since it’s an island state, you’ll eat incredible seafood such as oysters, salmon, and abalone.

Tasmania is also famous for their cheese. They produce award-winning cheeses such as blues, bries, cheddar, and camembert. If you prefer goat and sheep cheese, Tasmania is also famous for them.

What to Do?

Now that you know Tasmania deserves to be on your travel bucket list, what exactly should you do?

While everything in Tasmania is amazing, here are a few things to do in Tasmania.

Sullivan’s Cove

Hobart, the Tasmanian capital, is a charming city. While you’re in the capital, you should visit Sullivan’s Cove. Everything in this cove was made from the British Colonial era. You’re exposed to Georgia-era buildings from the 19th century.

Wineglass Bay

Wineglass Bay has been mentioned several times already, and for good reason. This stretch of land consists of white beaches, stunning waters, and covered in peaks called the Hazards. There’s nothing in the world like Wineglass Bay.

Convict Relics

One of the Tasmanian history staples are the Australian convicts forced into Tasmania during the 19th century. While this was an ugly time in Tasmanian history, it’s worth looking at some of the relics.

Port Arthur is the most important relic to visit. Port Arthur is now a series of ruins, but you can still see Gothic-looking structures and even cellblocks.

Cradle Mountain

Out west in Tasmania, you’ll find the famous Cradle Mountains.

Dove Lake is surrounded by many mountains, the highest being Cradle Mountain. These mountains tower over the gorgeous lake and are encompassed in mist. If you love hiking, you should take a four-house hike into Ballroom Rainforest.

Feed a Tasmanian Devil

Because the Tasmanian Devil is the most famous animal in Tasmania, you can get up close and feed one!

There’s a Tasmanian Devil sanctuary near Cradle Mountain that welcomes visitors to feed these cute but vicious creatures. If you’re lucky, they will behave and you can pet one!

Unfortunately, Tasmanian Devils are endangered. Donate to the sanctuary to help spread Tasmanian Devil awareness.

Visit the Bay of Fires

If there’s one beach that can compete with Wineglass Bay, it’s the Bay of Fires.

The Bay of Fires is not only one of the most beautiful places in Australia but is also known as one of the hottest.

But walking down the white sandy beaches is worth it as you gaze out into the ocean. If you’re lucky, you can spot a whale or a dolphin!

Bay of Fires is best known for the orange-colored boulders scattered throughout the beach. This is one of the most famous photo ops for tourists.

Visit Tasmania!

If there’s one place in the world you should visit it’s Tasmania. Tasmania travel encompasses beautiful scenes, an interesting history, great food, plenty of hiking, and cute Tasmanian Devils.

Are you experiencing some serious wanderlust? Take a look at more world travel articles!
